Pain medicine can be an important part of staying active and feeling better. However, using pain medicine safely is key to ensure that it helps, not hurts you. How to use pain medicine safely Always follow your provider’s directions, and take your medicine exactly as prescribed. If you’re unsure about when or how to take your medicine, contact your provider or pharmacist. Keeping track of your doses with a list or phone reminder can help you stay on track. Remember to store your medicine safely, away from children and others who shouldn’t have access. Misusing pain medicine can lead to serious health problems. This could be things such as taking more than prescribed, using someone else’s medicine, or mixing it with alcohol or other drugs. If you notice you need more medicine to feel OK, or you’re taking it just to feel calm or normal, you’re not alone. Many people experience this, and support is available. If you’re struggling, you’re not alone Asking for help takes courage, and there is no shame in needing support for pain or substance use.
